  • Cooking from home, chefs, baking

With government officials urging us to stay at home during this global pandemic, many of us are looking for productive and comforting ways to pass the time.

Being limited with some outdoor activities may seem dreadful, but there are plenty of ways to keep us entertained and preoccupied. Some of these creative ways to keep us busy are cooking and baking. Not only do these two skills provide us with ways to nourish ourselves, but they are also valuable life skills and provide a way of reducing anxiety and stress. Food is all about connecting and bonding.

We’ve heard plenty of stories of people baking their way through the pandemic with sourdough and banana bread. The hashtag #stressbaking followed by photos of baked goods has taken the world by storm. In these unprecedented times, people are turning to their kitchens. Cooking is a life skill that is both soothing and meditative and provides comfort, which is something we all need right now.

The lockdown is the time to try out recipes that we don’t normally have time for.

There are many positive consequences to come out of this pandemic including improved health and nutrition and enjoying shared meals with family. Families have taken to their gardens to relearn how to grow food, and many relationships have become stronger as cooking and eating together can be a wonderful bonding experience.

Equipped with unread cookbooks hidden away and kitchen tools that might never have seen the light of day, we now can make proper use of our kitchen. Now’s the time to play with ingredients, adding a new flavor to that dish you love, or trying to come up with one from scratch. Make it a goal to try a new cuisine or a new dessert.

Some restaurants and businesses even have DIY meal kits, which is fantastic if you wanted to try your hand at making your favorite dish. Not only is that a fun project but it also helps inject money into a business that may be struggling at this time. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, now’s the time to practice all those mouthwatering dishes you’ll be craving for, so get to it!
